Tools and Hardware Reviews of Toro Ultra 12 Amp Variable Speed Electric Blower/Vacuum With Metal Impeller #51599

Customer Review: Electric blower/vacuum
Summary: 4 Stars

We got the blower when expected and the service was excellent. It was our first electric blower, having used gas for years, and it works great.

Customer Review: Awesome machine: does what it is supposed to do!
Summary: 5 Stars

This machine is well constructed and works well. I wish it had a finger trigger on-off switch that would shut it off when I fall or drop the machine.

Customer Review: Handy Toro Blower/Vac
Summary: 4 Stars

The Toro Ultra Variable Speed Electric Blower/Vac is a handy tool. Overall, it has the power needed to handle vacuuming and blowing leaves. My only complaint is that the leaves clog the tube a bit too often.

Customer Review: Definitely worth the buck
Summary: 5 Stars

It's been 4 weeks since I got this blower. So far all are positive:

* Powerful
* electric (no smoke smell)
* light-weighted
* easy to operate and to change accessories
* even mulching isn't as bad as I thought

Both my wife and I used it for blowing and mulching the (mainly walnut) leaves. The only negative thing we can think of is the noise of mulching these walnut leaves with tiny branches. We're a little worried the blade may wear off soon. So we started to leave the leaves un-mulched in the yard bin. No big deal if we try to compress them (by weight) in the bin. No regrets so far.

Customer Review: Good for electric blower
Summary: 4 Stars

The toro Ultra 12 Amp Variable Speed Electric Blower/Vacuum works quite well given the limit that only so much power can be supplied from a standard outlet. It works pretty much as advertised, but the available CFM of air is not up to that of a good gas blower. The variable speed feature is handy when you don't want to build a pile of leaves, but for most other uses it's full speed ahead. It comes with an insert that narrows down the blower tube, but as far as I can tell its only purpose is to allow the peak air velocity to be advertised at a high number; true, the velocity is higher but the amount of air (CFM) is less so it doesn't work any better with the insert.

Probably the best feature of this unit is the metal impeller. Cheaper units use plastic which is OK if you only use the unit for leaf blowing, but if you use it as a leaf vacuum as I do, gravel and small twigs will destroy the plastic ones pretty fast. I also learned that, while you can vacuum damp leaves, don't attempt to vacuum wet leaves because they pack into a brown mass that clogs the space around the blower making a mess to dig out with a twig or screwdriver.

The vacuum bag makes the unit a bit clumsy to use, but it does empty a lot more easily than my craftsman lawnmower bag. The unit ships in a reasonably sized box with the vacuum tube in two pieces. However, once you assemble the vacuum tube, you can't take it apart. This makes storage or packing in a crowded trunk a bit of a problem. A design that allowed for disassembly would be a big improvement here.

As for noise, it's not as bad as a gas unit, but I strongly recommend using earplugs. All said, knowing what I've learned since my purchase, I'd buy it again.
